Why pixel art to Perler beads needs its own converter
Pixel art is already a bead pattern: one square, one bead. The problem is that sprites you find online are almost never at their original size. They are scaled up 4×, 10× or 22.67×, smoothed, and saved as JPG or WEBP. A regular image converter resamples that picture on its own grid, which cuts through the original pixels and leaves you with smeared outlines, doubled lines and missing eyes.
BeadBun works the other way round:
- It measures where color changes happen across the image to find the true pixel size and grid offset.
- It samples the center of every original pixel, skipping the compression blur at the edges.
- It matches each pixel to the nearest real bead color and removes the flat background.
Tips for Perler bead pixel art and sprites
- A 16×16 or 32×32 sprite fits on one or two square pegboards. Great for magnets and keychains.
- Dark outlines are what make sprites readable in beads, so keep black or dark brown in your palette.
- For drawings or photos that are not pixel art, use photo to Perler beads instead.
