Tips for summer Perler bead projects
Summer perler bead patterns are mostly about food and sunshine: the Watermelon Slice, Kawaii Ice Cream Cone, Cherries and a bold Sunflower. They're bright, simple to read and a good way to keep kids busy on a rainy afternoon during summer break.
Fruit designs make great fridge magnets and beach-bag keychains. The Watermelon Slice (20x10) is a fun shape for an iced-drink coaster, and the Cherries clip nicely onto a zipper pull. The 25x25 Sunflower is the showpiece here, worth framing or hanging on a door for late summer.
Hot colors fade into each other if they're too close, so make sure reds, pinks and oranges have enough contrast. The ice cream cone has 9 colors, so check your stash before starting; you can swap flavors in the pattern maker and make strawberry, mint or chocolate versions as a set.
If you're crafting outside, keep the board out of direct sun until you iron, and cover the board on a windy day so loose beads don't scatter. A finished piece left in a hot car may soften and warp, so bring it inside. For more bright snack designs, see the food patterns.
