Tips for christmas Perler bead projects

Christmas perler bead patterns are made to hang. A design like the 15×17 Christmas Ornament or the 9×17 Candy Cane is about 3 to 4 inches tall once ironed (each standard bead is 5mm), which is a nice size for a tree. Leave one bead out near the top, or thread ribbon through a hole after ironing, and you have a hook point.

Red, green and white are the colors you will run short on. The Santa Hat, Candy Cane and Christmas Present all depend on red and white, and the Christmas Tree at 21×27 uses a lot of green. The Snowflake is only three colors, so it works well in batches: make a dozen in white, or try clear or pearl beads for an icy look. In the pattern maker you can change the snowflake's color to light blue or silver in a few clicks.

If you want to give these as gifts, start in early November. The Gingerbread Man, Hot Cocoa Mug and Penguin with Scarf make good gift tags and magnets, and a set of four snowflakes glued to cork makes a simple coaster set. Kids can handle the candy cane and santa hat on their own; the tree and snowman have more detail and benefit from tweezers.

Leave a gap at the top edge before ironing, or drill a small hole afterward, and loop ribbon or fishing line through it. Iron both sides so the ornament holds up to being handled.

The Candy Cane uses three colors and is only 9 beads wide, so it is quick and hard to get wrong.
